Five Frequently Performed Soft Tissue Surgeries
General veterinary hospitals commonly perform both routine and life-saving surgeries on pets. While soft tissue and some orthopedic procedures are performed, some complex soft tissue surgeries are only done in specialty veterinary hospitals. Here are five of the most common soft tissue surgeries performed in general veterinary practices.
#1: Spay and neuter surgeries
The surgeries of spaying and neutering are frequently conducted in general veterinary practices, sometimes even on a daily basis. These operations involve the removal of reproductive organs and are very effective in preventing various health and behavioral problems in pets.
#2: Foreign body removal surgery
Pets such as cats and dogs often ingest items that can block their gastrointestinal tracts, resulting in the need for removal. Among the most frequently found foreign bodies that are removed from pets are:
- Clothing, especially socks
- Bones
- Corn cobs
- Rubber and plastic toys
- Hair bands
- Thread
Dogs are usually picky about what they chew on, but cats have a tendency to be intrigued by string-like objects. This can be very dangerous because it can cause a linear foreign body, which can bunch up the intestines and even cut through them.
#3: Mass removal surgery
Pets can develop both benign and cancerous masses on their bodies. These masses can grow quickly, become ulcerated, or develop in a way that affects their movement, breathing, or eating. They can be removed from various parts of the body, such as the skin, ears, mouth, or abdomen.
#4: Bladder stone removal surgery
Bladder stones are a common issue among pets as a result of urinary tract disease, genetics, improper diet, or inadequate hydration. If the stones are made of a specific material, a prescription diet can dissolve them; otherwise, they must be removed surgically, and the bladder needs to be flushed to prevent urinary blockage.
#5: Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome repair surgery
Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) repair surgeries are becoming increasingly common as the popularity of flat-faced breeds such as pugs, English bulldogs, and French bulldogs grows. These breeds may require surgeries such as nostril widening, soft palate shortening, or laryngeal saccule removal in order to facilitate better breathing.
